The secret to pitching success is to have great relationships in place before you need them. As I built my career, I realized that the proof of a job done well was my true friendships with my editors. It’s just like with your closest friends—you never have to say your name, because they know you and they know your voice. The warmth and trust that goes with that are the most essential ingredients in any successful working relationship. “Hi, it’s me,” is the ultimate sign of networking success. “Hi, it’s Aliza,” is the runner-up. This is the case in any industry. The friendlier you are with colleagues inside and outside the company, the more effective you will be at your job.
The reason relationships are essential to success is because sometimes it’s going to be your job to promote an idea or a product that you know is really a hard sell. That’s just the reality. So how do you do that? Well, you have to pull favors, and if you’re not friends with the people who are ultimately in control of your success, then people are not going to go out of their way to help you.
